How-to Clean:
Step 1: if your item is dusty or has loose debris on it you will want to brush, vacuum, or even use air to blow off the surface, concentrating on nooks and crannies.
Step 2: Next you will want to thoroughly clean using a degreasing cleaner. Wise Owl’s Green EZ finishing cleaner works on any existing finish, it is easy to use and amazing at degreasing. You can use it full strength or dilute it . Using a green scotch brite pad, toothbrush or cleaning brush to get into all cracks and crevices. Do not forget to get into the corners, a dental pick works great. ALL DIRT, GREASE, AND GRIME MUST BE REMOVED FOR OPTIMAL ADHESION. Follow with a water damp wipe down for solid wood or a 50/50 combo of Denatured alcohol and water or for MDF/wood composite pieces. For most pieces this will be sufficient for cleaning.
Following a thorough cleaning, scuff sand your piece with 150-180 grit sandpaper to give the piece some "tooth" for the primer and paint to attach itself to. Remove any dust before continuing with primer.
Primer: Stir the product with a circular, lifting motion until the product is uniform throughout. Dry to touch in 1 hour, reapply in 4 hours under normal drying conditions. Sealing some stains may require two coats and a longer reapply window to allow the primer to dry thoroughly prior to finishing. This dry time is what seals in those stains and tannins.
If applying a second coat it is best to use a 220 grit sanding pad with light press to give youthe smoothest results. Be careful to not sand through the first primer coating, which is known as burn through. Use the same sanding practices in step 2. Vacuum or blow the dust created from sanding the primer. Next use a microfiber cloth or a tack cloth specially made for water-based paints to wipe off the entire surface before applying a second coat of primer.
After priming, wait 24 hours to apply paint..
Dark Gray Primer- Deep blues, over writing, over patterns, over anything multicolor, anytime you want to deepen the shade of your final paint coat, and under dark colors. NOTE: not ideal for yellow, deep gray tends to “green up” yellow.
Clear Primer- When you want to distress your piece.
White Primer- Under whites or light neutrals.
Gray Primer- Use under reds, yellows, blues, and medium to dark tones. On walls that are painted different colors.
